New Crops-New Uses-New Markets
by See Title Page
part of the Agriculure Series

Epilogue

Secretary Madigan has made research and development of alternative uses for our agricultural products a priority. Through his leadership and this initiative, we can boost farm income, create new jobs in America, and ensure a healthier environment.

Agriculture is our largest industry, providing jobs for more than 20 million Americans. That is why encouraging and investing in new ways to use our farm commodities are important not only to agriculture but also to the economy and the well-being of our society.

Americans today are more aware then ever of the interdependence of agriculture, energy, health, and the environment. This growing awareness has led to a demand for a generation of new products. Consumers want products that will help preserve resources for the future, promote healthier food choices, reduce our dependence on foreign energy, and ensure a productive agricultural industry.

In this Yearbook, we have emphasized the importance of new uses to America and to you and your family. We have reported on the progress achieved to date and highlighted the steps we are taking to reach even greater success. And, I hope, we have sparked interest in these exciting developments in American agriculture.

Looking ahead, our 1993 Yearbook of Agriculture will focus on the relationship between diet and health and offer practical information on nutrition.
